Breast Cancer Prevention

Breast Cancer Prevention
Today, there are many risk factors that have contributed to more women being diagnosed with breast cancer. Most breast cancers AREN’T inherited — only about 5% to 10% are. This means there are many things you can do to lower your risk of being diagnosed.
If detected early, breast cancer has a 5-year survival rate of over 95%. The mortality rate for breast cancer could decrease by 30% if all women over the age of 50 had a mammogram.

Prevention & Early Detection

The earlier that breast cancer is detected, the more likely it is that treatment can be curable. Mammograms can detect cancer up to two years before a lump can be felt. Screening mammograms are simply x-rays of each breast from the top and the side. The amount of radiation from a mammogram is very small. Regular mammograms can decrease the mortality of breast cancer by 30%. The majority of breast cancers are associated with abnormal mammographic findings. Regrettably, about two-thirds of women do not follow recommended guidelines for mammography.
